Sugar and tooth decay are bedfellows

Sugar and tooth decay are bedfellows
The cavity is a phenomenon of demineralization of hard tissue of the tooth (enamel, dentin, cementum), caused by the acidic conditions created by sugars made by food and bacteria of dental plaque. The sugar consumption is a critical element in the formation of cavities.

Sugar the most cariogenic "are fast sugars, including sucrose, the main component of sugar cane and beet. This is the most widely used in confectionery. Then glucose (from industrial corn, used in pastry), fructose (fruit sugar), lactose (milk sugar) and starch (sugar slow grains and starchy), which is much less cariogenic.

Preventing Cavities
Hygiene is fundamental: it prevents the formation of plaque and the action of bacteria.

Prevention is based on 3 elements:

The fluorine, given in addition to early childhood through adolescence by prescription dentist, improves resistance to tooth decay;
An oral hygiene strict and regular dental checks every 6 months;
The limitation of cariogenic sugars, so the factor less controllable because the sugar in all its forms is everywhere, in cupboards and refrigerators and in all places that children frequent. Nutrition education gets results in preventing tooth decay, especially in the privileged classes. Like other nutritional imbalance problems (eg obesity), caries is a disease of the poor.
