Dental caries
Definition
Caries is a disease caused by the deterioration of the enamel and ivory of the tooth and moving towards the formation of cavities, leading to progressive destruction of these bodies.
Decay is the third most common disease in the world.
Tooth decay was previously a very common, perhaps the most widespread. With the addition of fluoride and regular visits to the dentist and through the food change this scourge had declined in frequency. Nevertheless, the new eating habits with a lot of simple sugars (soda containing sugar such as Coca-Cola among others) made that dental caries are increasing.
The process of decay involves three factors:
The plaque, which consists of a substance that forms on the surface of the tooth. It is composed of food debris, saliva and bacteria. The bacteria in plaque feed on sugars, and then incorporate the proliferate and then secrete an acid that will attack the tooth surface (enamel), which leads to the formation of a cavity. If, in addition, the surface of the tooth is demineralized ie weakened, the digging of the cavity will be much faster.
The field related to heredity.
Food.
Is no doubt that food plays a role promoting the most important (carbohydrates: sugars). Indeed, adolescence a child 12 years has already had four cavities.
Decay appears mainly in the areas anfractueuses ie parties winding deep dental crown (part of the tooth surface that is visible over the root that is set in the gum). These areas are particularly difficult to clean that promotes the onset of decay.
In detail the decay starts at the enamel, creating a small cavity, it will grow within the calcified tissue that covers the pulp ie in dentin. The accession of bacteria on the surface of the tooth is consistent with the gradual absorption of calcium and phosphate component tooth enamel which causes them to demineralisation.
Little by Peula cavity grows bacteria eventually invade the flesh itself.
If at this stage any treatment by the dentist or the dental (medical specialty concerned with the mouth) is practiced, tooth decay leads to the destruction of the tooth and may lead to infection of the bone under asset due to the penetration of bacterial germs.
